J.H. Colton’s Dissected Maps 1860 UNITED STATES January 23, 2010

J.H. Colton’s Dissected Maps 1860 UNITED STATES
RARE – NORTH SOUTH AMERICA ASIA EUROPE AFRICA SERIES
J.H. Colton’s Series of Dissected Maps. North America. South America. Europe. United States. Asia. Africa. In Two Sizes

J.H. Colton was from New York.

This is the map of the United States.

This Colton puzzle map uses the map of the United States that first appeared in Colton’s Cabinet Atlas of 1859, and was later used in Colton’s School Atlas of 1864 and American School Quarto Geography of 1865. The puzzle itself is undated, but the map is copyrighted in 1860. (I’ve researched this to be correct, if this is wrong would you please let me know.)

With this puzzle there is 32 peices. It looks like 3 pieces are missing, but they are the small pieces. (Please look at the pictures for more detail.) Box measures 6.5″ x 5.5″.
This is currently for sale on Ebay-I am selling for a client of mine. But if you’re interested you’d better look fast…it’ll be going going gone soon. This is a rare puzzle indeed!

FIRE ENGINE PICTURE PUZZLE MCLOUGHLIN BROS 1887 January 22, 2010

1887 McLoughlin Bros Fire Engine Puzzle in Wooden Box

This puzzle is extremely rare and only 2 pieces are missing. If I counted correctly I have 67 of 69 pieces. Puzzle measures 25″ x 18″. This is truly a wonderful find, and finding another one is hard to find in the shape of quality. When the puzzle is assembled there are like mentioned 2 pieces missing but also 2 pieces that have been taped together. With a little TLC it is mend-able.
You can find it here for sale- or perhaps if it was already sold then maybe not.

1880′S LIFE SIZE HARNESS HORSE W/ Cast Iron Legs/Ears Nebraska-99″ Full Body Length-Museum Quality/RARE November 12, 2009

1880′s Life Size Harness Horse

This beautiful horse came from Missouri back in the day. Now my client wants to part with it. This horse has Real horsehair where it counts and glass eyes. The ears are removable and made out of cast iron, the legs are also made from cast iron. The horse is attached to the base as you will see in the pictures below. The mouth moves- this was made this way- I would assume to show how to harness a horse with all the gear. The base is original, and the horse is made of wood with what we believe to be a plaster casting or paper mache type material over the wood.

As you can also see by the pictures the horse has the body parts as where they count as well. (See pictures for the detail).

Color is dapple gray and paint is 95% & original. This being extremely heavy -I can’t get a good shot of the side of the horse. The side by the wall that is. You can see a couple of shots of the side.

You can see how big it is in comparison to the wall and items around it.

The important measurements are as follows:

62″ Middle of Back Height

99″ Full Body Length

83 1/2″ Top of Head to floor not including the ears though

36″ Bottom of Belly to floor

Mint Antique Prize Silver Parade Saddle Marked-Rhodes October 13, 2009

This was given to the 1st Place Saddle Bronc Riding Winner, however the winner is unknown due to poor record keeping in the 1930′s. It could be that this is earlier than 1930′s maybe late 1920′s. The information is something rare indeed. If you would happen to know the name of the person who won this-please do share. As I’ve come up short handed in trying to locate this information.

The saddle is of very dark leather, almost a very dark brown, I’ve seen other black ones and I think that this is not that dark.

This is in MINT Condition with a few minor dents on the swells. This can be fixed by a professional. There is Pictures of a Cowboy on each of the Legstraps, you should be able to see these by the shots provided.

The markings show:

This is on the back of the seat———————————————————————————————-

First Place Saddle Bronc Riding American Royal Livestock and Rodeo Presented By Kansas City Stockyards

Underneath the horn is another silver marking that shows:

RHODES Maker Kansas City, MO – SILVER by HUGH MILLER Olathe, Kansas

I am selling this for a client and this has been in a private collection for many years. It has never been shown to the public- this is truly a ONE-OF-A-KIND Parade Saddle. All the silver is Sterling. Complete with a 16″ seat. This is a beautiful saddle and the Flower Tooling is excellent.

The unsuspected Trojan Email from Facebook…… December 4, 2008

Today I had a very interesting day. It started off by walking outside to notice that it snowed. I am not very fond of the snow and either is my little puppy, needless to say that I have 3 children who would walk to school in the snow with no coat on just to say that they were outside. Anyways, down to the terrifying stuff.

I received a Facebook email today from a friend I do know. It indicated that there was something funny and to click on the link. I did as the instructions led me to believe. I was then routed to a site that wants you to update your player and install something. I am used to being click happy, when I noticed it actually takes you to an IP address 124.106.134.254 and says YuoTube instead of YouTube. That is some dirty trick. I immediately started the “Whoa stop” process and began to back out and then figure out what was going on.

Popups were appearing on my screen like they were meant for Windows Security; I knew what ever it was it was bad. “Why didn’t my antivirus pick it up?”

My computer would not respond to anything and everything that I clicked on said spyware, clean your disk, free scan software, we have your protected passwords, your computer was infected…with a Trojan. Arg, I was freaking out, heart was racing and I thought that I needed a paper bag to breathe in. I didn’t even install it all the way, and still my computer was in major malfunction mode.

It would not respond to anything, I finally got it to do a system restore to yesterday; a very safe point; I was wearing the carpet down walking back and forth waiting for it to reboot.

“It worked!”  Until I tried to get back into my saved Firefox browser tabs- yes all 18 of them. I was getting a message:

Proxy Server Refused Connection

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

The browser is configured to use a proxy server, but the proxy refused a connection.

* Is the browser’s proxy configuration correct? Check the settings and try again.
* Does the proxy service allow connections from this network?
* Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.

Then I had to go back into my Firefox Proxy Settings and adjust. You can do this by following these steps-simply click on Tools > Advanced > Network > Settings. Then simply tick a ‘No Proxy’. Presto you are back in business.

Now regarding this Trojan I suggest you keep reading.

If this is the same version of the Zlob.N Trojan that warns about PSW.x-Vir that many other people have been getting, the popup had buttons to click to purchase anti-spyware or anti-virus products. Those products are phony and the whole thing a criminal scheme to take your money.

The Symantec website (they provide the Norton security products) has an excellent description of Zlob.N at http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-050812-3659-99&…

They have instructions for removal at http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-050812-3659-99&…

For removing viruses and spyware, you can try McAfee, Kapersky, Norton and F-Secure all are excellent. Be sure to get their complete Internet security suites instead of just antivirus.

Tomorrow will be a much better day, now how am I going to make up those 3 hours? Where is the Doc & Marty when you really need em?

My Adventure with 1st Grade Class Field trip…. May 2, 2009

Have you ever volunteered as a helper on a field trip? Well I did and here is how it went. Get in and hold on! The day was planned to go to the UNL Stadium in Lincoln, Ne and from the stadium then go to the Lincoln’s Children Zoo across town. Did I know the way, heck no.

The parents were not allowed to ride on the bus with the kids so we all had to follow, 18 cars to be exact.  It was a funny site watching all of us tag along.

The bus departed the school at approx 8:40 a.m. and from then we were on making the 70 minute drive. It wasn’t so bad I know my way to Lincoln but was not sure what exit to get off on so I had no choice but to follow. Besides I had my 7 yr old in the big Yellow & Black School Bus and she’s never rode a bus before. Anyways,  we’re driving and some of the parents are not as heavy footed as I, so I decided to pass the slower drivers to get a closer look at the bus. I was currently 9th in line. I scooched my way up to the 3rd place.  All was good until we were heading up to downtown traffic and lots of stop lights. Needless to say I was stuck at a red light, and I was the first- all the rest of cars were behind me, I was hoping to fishtail the bus-but the driver never slowed down when approaching yellowish lights to wait for us. Damn, I just lost the bus, as I was giving updates to my Twitter Followers. I turned left, straight, and then right hoping I was going the right way. Finally I seen the bus-now to find a parking spot. I just wanted to hurry and catch up with my daughter-everyone is still following me-I pulled into a parking garage and the gate would not go up until I realized there was a small green button to push to raise the gate. We all parked on 2nd level and made our way to the bus 1 block away. As I talked to the other parents following me I made sure to tell them I was not familiar with the roads and its a good thing I took the right way.

Doing a head count is something else when you have 70 + kids and each parent is assigned to their child and 1 other child. We are standing there and a youngster starts puking, and it’s all over her coat and shirt. Anyone have any hand sanitizer?

The tour started with this very nice gentleman, but I didn’t catch his name.

Tour Guide @ UNL Stadium

Tour Guide @ UNL Stadium

We took a fast tour and got some great shots of the Field where the Huskers play Football and even got to run on the field from the tunnel. We saw the skybox seating area and weight room.  I think the parents were more excited than the students. We all got lots of great shots, you can see them on my Flickr or my Facebook account if we are connected, you can also go back and read over my in real time Twitter notifications. You can get to them along the right side of my blog.

The tour was finally done and we are off to the Children ‘s Zoo, the kids were boarding the bus fast and we (parents) quickly getting to our vehicle to follow the bus. Remember we are in the parking garage. We had to pay to park so time was not on our side this rainy morning. I asked some parents if they knew how to get to the Zoo from the stadium and none of them did, neither did I. Crap, gotta get back to the bus. The exit of the parking garage was clear on the other side so I was trying to follow the mom in front of me- well that didn’t work out- I lost her too. I got back to the bus and had to make an illegal U-Turn to get behind it. I was hoping the others that were following me hurry and did the same thing. I am just trying to stick behind the bus, (we did not get any directions from the teachers for routes, normally we do). If you know Lincoln, Ne downtown it is full of stop lights. I’m praying that the bus will wait for the followers this time around. Red light, I am first and yep I just lost the bus. Where is everyone behind me?  I see the bus 4 blocks ahead of me and I know there is a right turn up ahead. I had to catch up, usually my husband does the driving in Lincoln, I was not sure where to turn in case I became distant from the bus. I had to run 2 red lights to catch up with the us, as I look in my rear view mirror a few were following me. This can’t be good-why doesn’t the driver slow the hell down and wait for us.

We finally manage to pull into the Zoo parking lot, & whew! That was something else. The Lincoln’s Children’s Museum was very nice, however not as big as a thought. We had to take sack lunches and sit on the wet pavement.

Arrgggggg

Arrgggggg

The teachers came around and gave us tickets to get in and to ride the train, they said to meet back @ 1:30 for bus departure.

We had a nice time and took some awesome pictures, and rode the train-which the track is on the outside gate of the zoo.

Departure time-I thought to myself I am going to get right behind the bus this time, and I’m not letting any cutters in, I wasn’t sure how to get back to the interstate. Shame on me for not printing a map myself.

There was another gal who said she was going to follow me & I said I’ll do my best to stay behind the bus. Another car snuck in and yet again I was trapped at the stop light, and the bus is going and going and not slowing down. Then gone, I could not see it anymore. You know that feeling, I then saw this yellow thing way down the road and hoped that was it. I was passing cars, and had to run 2 more yellowish orange lights to catch up, I looked in my rearview mirror and another parent is doing the same. Remember I said 18 cars were following the bus, well now there is only us 3.  See that’s what I’m talking about…….slow down.

We caught the bus and then once we made a familiar turn I knew exactly where I was going. That is some stressful driving! If you ever have to volunteer for a field trip and you have to go out of town, just to be safe print a map from Mapquest yourself, don’t rely on the teachers to do it for you.

Original Signed Peter Hurd Watercolor Art July 3, 2009

Original Signed “Peter Hurd” Watercolor Art-Very Rare
1904-1984 – Artist Peter Hurd was born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, and was educated at the New Mexico Military Institute, which he attended from 1917 to 1920. From there, he attended West Point Military Academy, and was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy. However, selling a painting to a supervisor, he felt encouraged to become an artist, and he resigned his commission in 1923. Hurd then attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania for a year, but left to be a private nonpaying pupil of N.C. Wyeth. He lived in Wyeth’s barn at Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania for three years, also studying at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art. During this time, Hurd worked as an illustrator, working mostly with books. In 1929, he began to work in tempera on gesso-prepared panels, the medium he most frequently used up until the 1960’s, when he began to work in watercolor. That same year, he married Wyeth’s daughter Henriette, a professional painter and sister of Andrew Wyeth. The new couple went to New Mexico for an extended honeymoon. They later established their home there in San Patricio, and Henriette also became a prominent artist. In the mid-1930s, Hurd was a mural painter, completing post-office murals in Big Springs and Dallas, Texas, and in Alamogordo, New Mexico. His paintings invoked clear images of his subject. Of one of his works, a critic stated, “An impeccable craftsmanship modeled the flanks of New Mexico hills and drew the cowboys raising dust in rodeos under a glittering June sky.” Soon Hurd was nationally recognized from a feature article done of the artist and his work in Life magazine. As he became known as a regionalist painter, particularly recognized for his landscape, figure and genre paintings of New Mexico, Hurd focused on capturing light and atmosphere. Many of his works depict the panoramic views he saw from his beloved ranch land as well as the people with whom he was most familiar. During WWII, Hurd was a war correspondent for Life. By 1958, his recognition had spread, and he was appointed to the President’s Commission of Fine Arts. However, his official portrait of President Johnson for the White House collection was rejected by the president, and is now in the National Portrait Gallery.

1888 Map of Nebraska City, Nebraska August 4, 2009

This is an excellent piece of history to own. It is very delicate, measurements come in at 77” long x 60” wide. The top and bottom are attached to a piece of wood w/ nails. This is original, as you will soon see by the pictures that it needs to be in a professionals hand. The map is starting to crackle, I only unrolled it to take a picture and then rolled it back up carefully. You can see how it is starting to crackle from being rolled up too many times, and mainly because of the map being over 100 years old. I took many pictures for you to base your decision.

In smaller print along the top it says-
